  • We collect the minimum data needed to run the site, send updates you asked for, measure traffic, and show affiliate/partner links.
  • You can access, correct, or delete your data and opt out of marketing at any time.
  • We comply with POPIA (South Africa) and, where applicable, GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA/CPRA (California).

What we collect

1) Data you provide directly

  • Contact details (name, email) via forms, comments, or email.
  • Newsletter preferences and feedback.
  • Order or giveaway details (if we run promotions).

2) Data collected automatically

  • Device and usage data (IP address, browser type/version, pages visited, time on page, referrer/UTM).
  • Cookies, local storage, and similar technologies (see Cookie Policy).
  • Approximate location (country/region) derived from IP for analytics/fraud prevention.

3) Data from third parties

  • Analytics and marketing platforms (e.g., Google Analytics).
  • Social platforms if you interact with embedded content.
  • Affiliate networks when you click a tracked link (they record the click; we may see aggregate conversions, not your card data).

We do not collect special categories of data (health, religion, etc.) and we do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. Parents may contact us to remove a child’s information.

Why we use your data (purposes)

  • Provide & operate the site (site hosting, security, performance).
  • Respond to inquiries and provide customer support.
  • Email updates/marketing when you opt in.
  • Analytics & improvements to understand what content helps readers.
  • Affiliate revenue & disclosures (we link to products and may earn a commission).
  • Compliance & enforcement (terms, fraud prevention, record keeping, legal requests).

Legal bases we rely on

POPIA (South Africa): consent; performance of a contract; legitimate interests (running a safe, useful site); legal obligation.
GDPR/UK GDPR (if you are in the EEA/UK):

  • Consent: newsletters, non-essential cookies.
  • Contract: when you request services/resources.
  • Legitimate interests: site security, core analytics, preventing abuse.
  • Legal obligation: tax, regulatory records.

Cookies & similar tech

We use essential cookies for security and functionality, and (with consent where required) analytics and affiliate tracking cookies. See our Cookie Policy for full details, including categories, purposes, and retention.

Third-party processors (examples)

We only share data with service providers that help us operate the site, under data-processing terms:

  • Website & infrastructure: WordPress + [Hosting Provider/CDN]
  • Analytics: Google Analytics 4 (aggregated usage stats)
  • Email marketing: [Email service, e.g., MailerLite/Mailchimp]
  • Forms/anti-spam: WPForms/Contact Form 7 + reCAPTCHA [if enabled]
  • Affiliate tracking: [Amazon Associates / Impact / Awin / other] (click and purchase data handled by the merchant/affiliate network)

We don’t sell your personal data. For U.S. visitors, “share” for cross-context behavioral advertising can happen via ad/analytics cookies—see Your rights for opt-out options.

Comments and user content

When you leave comments, we collect what you enter plus your IP and browser user agent to help spam detection. Your comment (and name/alias) is public once approved.

International transfers

We may process data on servers outside your country (e.g., EU/UK/US). Where required, we use safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses, DPAs with processors, and strict access controls.

Data retention

We keep personal data only as long as needed:

  • Contact inquiries: up to 24 months after last interaction.
  • Newsletter data: until you unsubscribe, then limited suppression records retained to honor opt-outs.
  • Analytics: 14 months (typical GA4 setting; configurable).
  • Legal/financial records: as required by law.

Security

We use HTTPS, role-based access, strong passwords/2FA on admin accounts, least-privilege access for vendors, and regular updates/backups. No method is 100% secure; we work to prevent and promptly respond to incidents.

Your rights

South Africa (POPIA)
You can access, correct, delete, or object to processing of your personal information, and lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator (South Africa). Contact us first so we can help quickly.

EU/UK (GDPR)
You have rights to access, rectify, erase, restrict, object, data portability, and to withdraw consent. You may complain to your local Data Protection Authority.

California (CCPA/CPRA)
Residents may request disclosure or deletion of personal information, opt-out of “sharing” for cross-context behavioral advertising, and not be discriminated against for exercising rights.
Opt-out request: email [email protected] with the subject “Do Not Sell or Share”.

We will verify requests and respond within the applicable statutory timeframe.

Marketing choices

  • Email: use the Unsubscribe link in any message or email [email protected].
  • Cookies/Ads: adjust preferences in our cookie banner and your browser settings; use industry tools such as YourOnlineChoices/NAI where available.

Embedded content & external links

Articles may include embedded content (e.g., YouTube, Instagram). Embedded content behaves like a visit to those sites and may collect data. We’re not responsible for third-party sites—review their policies.

Affiliates & sponsored content

We use affiliate links and may receive a commission if you purchase through them. This doesn’t affect the price you pay. See our Affiliate Disclosure for details.

Data breaches

If a breach is likely to result in a high risk to your rights and freedoms, we’ll notify affected users and, where required, the relevant authority, without undue delay.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The “Effective date” above shows the latest version. Significant changes will be highlighted on this page and/or via email if appropriate.
